Roger Ebert on his interview in Esquire

[W]e’re all dying in increments. I don’t mind people knowing what I look like, but I don’t want them thinking I’m dying. To be fair, Chris Jones never said I was. If he took a certain elegiac tone, you know what? I might have, too. And if he structured his elements into a story arc, [...]

Roger Ebert: The Essential Man

Truly excellent article by Chris Jones in Esquire.
Ebert:
I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. [...]

My wish for the upcoming Apple event

What, only one? Well, this will probably surprise any Machead reading this, but it has nothing to do with the “tablet-thingy”. My wish? Take the AppleTV to the next level.
Personally, as someone who’s been waiting a long time to see the AppleTV become something more than just my iTunes library on my TV, I’d like [...]

Will secret copyright treaty restrict your digital rights?

Most Americans expect that their laws are only passed after some period of public debate between Republicans and Democrats or their news-channel proxies. However, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) may be an exception to this rule, and if it is signed, many United States laws concerning the Internet and ownership of data may become substantively [...]

Even today, Congress just has too much time on its hands

David Pogue, technology columnist for the New York Times, The Irksome Cellphone  Industry:
In recent weeks, the Senate Commerce Committee has been holding hearings about handset exclusivity. That’s when a phone maker (like Apple) offers a particular model (like the iPhone) to a carrier (like AT&T) exclusively for a period of time (like five years).
Come to [...]

Pixar grants girl’s dying wish to see ‘Up’

This story is all over the place this morning, but is too touching to ignore.  Annie Burris writing in The Orange County Register:
HUNTINGTON BEACH – Colby Curtin, a 10-year-old with a rare form of cancer, was staying alive for one thing – a movie.
From the minute Colby saw the previews to the Disney-Pixar movie Up, [...]

Well, for me it’s all up to FedEx now.  Might be early, might be late, but at least I won’t have to head across town to wait in line at the Apple Store…

Erin Brockovich arrives in Tennessee to save the day, whoopie!

Associated Press:
Environmental advocate Erin Brockovich arrived Thursday with a New York City legal team at the billion-gallon coal sludge disaster in Tennessee, and a class-action lawsuit seems almost certain.
Oh good. Now everything will be made perfect (just like in the movies), right?

The Atom Smashers

I recently watched a fantastic edition of Independent Lens entitled, The Atom Smashers. It was about Fermilab and the work they are doing in attempting to detect the Higgs boson. The film was very good, though a bit depressing, when you consider that America is steadily losing it’s leadership position in science and scientific research…
