Atheism is not a religion

Truly excellent piece at Skeptico:
This is a refrain I’m hearing a lot from religious apologists – atheism is a religion. Also its equally fallacious siblings, science is a religion and evolution is a religion. It’s a sign of their desperation that the best argument they have is not that atheism is wrong, or that god [...]

Pixar grants girl’s dying wish to see ‘Up’

This story is all over the place this morning, but is too touching to ignore.  Annie Burris writing in The Orange County Register:

Fossil solves mystery of dinosaur finger evolution

LiveScience:
Now, newly described fossilized hands from a beaked, plant-eating dinosaur, called Limusaurus inextricabilis, reveal a transitional step in the evolution of modern wings from dino digits. The finding could resolve a debate over which fingers ultimately became embedded in the wing.
Of course, to the intelligent design/creationist crowd, the finding merely creates two gaps in the [...]

Racism still ‘alive and well’ in the Tennessee Legislature

While we’re on the subject of sad commentaries… It would appear that racism is quite unfortunately still alive and well in the Tennessee Legislature.
The Tennessean:
Sherri Goforth, a legislative aide for Senate Republican Caucus Chairwoman Diane Black, sent the e-mail last month to other staff for Republican senators. It shows a portrait or photo of each [...]

Why is education always the first thing threatened by budget cuts?

If this isn’t a great national crisis, I don’t know what is.  It’s sadly indicative of what our culture truly values when you see stories from across the nation indicating that education is still one of the first things lawmakers want to cut when money gets tight at the state level.
Here in Tennessee, budget shortfalls [...]
