Understanding Evolution and Understanding Science
I want to call your attention to two truly excellent websites:
Understanding Evolution is “a collaborative project of the University of California Museum of Paleontology and the National Center for Science Education.”
Understanding Science is another project of the “University of California Museum of Paleontology of the University of California at Berkeley, in collaboration with a diverse [...]
Tennessee lawmakers seek to bring us a statewide dress code
In an attempt to legislate “taste”, or perhaps “style”, Tennessee Representative Joe Towns (D-Memphis), has sponsored a bill that would make criminal the public wearing of saggy pants! The Tennessean:
Under the proposal, a person could be fined as much as $1,000 for publicly wearing pants “below the person’s waistline … in a manner that exposes [...]
105 things you can do to promote skeptical activism
The Skeptics Society, publisher of Skeptic magazine, has issued a web release of “What Do I Do Next?“, a free 68-page ebooklet in PDF format:
Inside, you’ll discover 105 things you can do to promote science and advance skeptical thinking. In a conversation of unprecedented breadth and detail, the panelists share 30,000 words of wisdom and [...]
La. Gov. Bobby Jindal must be getting tired of all the crow
As damn near anyone can tell you, it isn’t very appetizing. CBS News:
A month after Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal complained about wasteful spending in President Obama’s economic stimulus package – including money he sneered was for “something called ‘volcano monitoring’” – Alaska pilots were grateful for such expenditures.
No shit.
Pope sticks to the script in Africa, dogma more important than lives
On Tueday, Pope Benedict XVI, had this to say about the pervasive and widespread AIDS crisis in Africa:
“You can’t resolve it with the distribution of condoms,” the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon. “On the contrary, it increases the problem.”
Sweet evil Jesus! Just throw more gasoline on the fucking fire [...]
In honor of the vernal equinox…
… I’ll link to my favorite equinox song, by comedian Tim Cavanagh. It is, fittingly, entitled Equinox (and is sung to the tune of Aqualung by Jethro Tull). For my money, equinox-inspired music doesn’t get much better than when Cavanagh sings:
Sitting on a park bench-
Noticing the day and night’s the same length.
Equinox!
Vernal or autumnal-
I prefer [...]
Catholic Church’s hypocrisy nothing new, but still baffles
And lest I be accused of unfairly attacking Catholics, please feel free to read that headline as “Christianity’s hypocrisy nothing new”. Feel better?
By now, of course, you’re all aware of the 9-year-old in Brazil who, raped by her own stepfather and carrying twins, was granted permission by the courts to have an abortion, upon the [...]
The FCC and “regulation” of mobile phone carriers
Bob Sullivan, writing at MSNBC.com’s The Red Tape Chronicles, FCC: Sprint Can Be Judge And Jury:
If you’re wondering why mobile phone carriers get away with imposing blatantly unfair policies, there’s a simple reason: No one stops them.
If the carriers were to be stopped, the Federal Communications Commission would be doing the stopping. But when [...]
Tennessee legislature proposes further infringements on liberty
Why would anyone want too much freedom anyway? I guess that’s the question being asked lately in the Tennessee State Legislature.
In another stark example of fundagelicals “using politics to beat people over the head with a moral crusade“, a bill has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee which would allow the legislature to seek to change [...]
Frank Schaeffer on conservatism and separation of church and state
Former Evangelist and author of Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back, Frank Schaeffer on D.L. Hughley Breaks the News, March 7, 2009:
…and the people, for instance, like William F. Buckley, who was a [...]

The Space Shuttle Discovery is fueld and ready for launch tonight at 8:20pm CDT.
UPDATE: Awww, the mission is likely to be scrubbed due to a fuel leak discovered in the external tank…

Tennessean newspaper profiles Middle Tennessee nonbelievers
The Tennessean today has a good article profiling nonbelievers in Middle Tennessee, as well as drawing attention to Secular Life, a Nashville-based Meetup group. Meetup is an interesting concept (and also sports a Nashville Atheists group) as it is a social networking site that actually has a social aspect to it–social in the non-Internet sense.
Nonbelievers’ [...]
