Evolution vs. the creation myth, it isn’t just an American problem

Here’s one from the “hmmm, I never really considered that” file at FoxNews: Muslim Scientists Prepare for Battle With Creationists:

The next major battle over evolutionary theory is likely to occur not in the United States but in the Islamic world or in countries with large Muslim populations because of rising levels of education and Internet access there, as well as the rising importance of biology, a scientist now says.

Of course, this could possibly be a good thing, if it helps better demonstrate how frighteningly similar fundamentalist Islam and fundamentalist Christianity really are.  Problem is, my guess is that pretty much the only people who’d consider that suggestion for more than a split-second before dismissing it out of hand are those whom I’d already describe as like-minded rationalists. Talk about “preaching to the choir”! (if you’ll pardon the pun)

UPDATE: Oh great! More good news on this front from Phil Plait at the BadAstronomyBlog, Creationist infect Europe, regarding a survey in the UK:

Only about 1/4 of teachers overall understand young-Earth creationism for what it is: wrong.

Yikes.
