Sorry, alter ego, but uh, I can’t not say something about this. The Rt. Rev. Patrick O’Donoghue, the Bishop of Lancaster and the man charged with reversing the decline in attendance at Catholic Mass in the UK, is blaming many, if not most, of society’s ills on… you guessed it: education. Now here’s a guy who really longs for the “good old days”. Well, that is, if you consider the Dark Ages the “good old days”.
I do agree with his premise: church attendance would increase if people would just stop learning and thinking. It is definitely one hell of a lot easier to be a Christian (or Jew or Muslim, for that matter) if you just don’t think too much. And why should you think for yourself? Those nice priests will be more than happy to do the thinking for you, and then tell you what to do/believe/feel/etc. What a load of crap.
As is so often the case, vjack quite succinctly states what would take me five paragraphs to express:
Yes, religion has long been the enemy of reason, but there is something truly despicable about religiously-motivated anti-intellectualism.
Despicable indeed.

Thanks for the mention. Of all the things the church could pick to oppose, selecting education should earn them many enemies.
