For crying out loud! Jerusalem, of all places, appears to have just elected a secular mayor!

JERUSALEM - A secular businessman appeared to have won an election for mayor of Jerusalem Tuesday against a powerful ultra-Orthodox Jewish leader in a race that again exposed the deep divide between religious and secular Israelis.

You’d think that in America, the land of the free, a secular candidate would have an equal shot at elected office, but it just ain’t so. No, in America, the “ultra-Orthodox” candidate would win in a landslide over the secular candidate. Of course, in America the sectarian candidate would be a “fundamentalist” (and would see him or herself as “mainstream”… which is itself another problem).
