McCain Displaying Early Dementia

THERE IS is little public discussion about John McCain’s mental state. Although his legendary temper was briefly considered last spring, that topic seems to have fallen off the radar screen.

More important, in my view, is the possibility that McCain is suffering from mild cognitive impairment, a precursor of dementia that is not uncommon in people of his age. The evidence for this is his frequent confusion regarding a variety of facts, his slow, halting speech and, on at least one occasion, a complete blank-out in which he appeared dumbstruck over a simple question about a woman’s right to have federally funded health insurance cover the cost of contraception, just as it covers the cost of Viagra for men.

As anyone who has seen the video will attest, McCain was literally speechless. Most of these mental lapses are not reported in the media and, therefore, are unknown to the general public.

Why is this relevant? The presidency of the United States is the most demanding and important job in the world. The person who holds that office must have his mental faculties completely intact. It is not ageist to raise the possibility that McCain may not meet that high standard at this point in his life. Rather, it is a subject that should be discussed openly and sensitively.
