What gives? You’re telling me that U.S. swimming legend Mark “the Shark” Spitz wasn’t invited to be present at the Beijing games to see Michael Phelps break his record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics?
Mark Spitz’s performance at the 1972 Summer Olymipics in Munich is still regarded as one of the greatest athletic performances in history. Spitz won gold medals in seven events, breaking the then world record in each of the seven events–a feat which has remained unequaled for 36 years. Not bad.
Michael Phelps is poised to not only equal but surpass that amazing feat. In the best traditions of American sport, Spitz should have been invited–formally invited–to be present. The snub was an incredible faux pas, and Spitz is right to feel more than a little slighted.
