Olympic events are not always your average sports

It seems like it’s always an Olympic event that makes me do a double-take. I mean, take the Chinese girls gymnastics team. When was the last time you heard about an unfair advantage in sport because someone was too young?

Sure, age is often an issue–Maurice Clarett sued the NFL in an attempt to be considered for the draft at the age of “Wow, I just got my driver’s license–neat!” But the NFL’s concern was that he was too young and might get his head knocked off, not that he was too young and therefore too good.

And, of course, there was that baseball player a few years back in the Little League World Series who drove himself to the game each day after having a couple beers with the boys down at the corner pub–well, at least when his wife wasn’t using the car.

But, there is something that just doesn’t look right about the Chinese girls gymnastics team. Maybe it’s that most of them look like they’d be eligible to be invited to my 11 year old daughter’s next sleepover. Or maybe it’s that one or two of them are still in Pull-Ups®, I don’t know.
