‘Faithbook’ launched on Facebook

Religious leaders, in an attempt to provide a space for “dialogue on matters of faith” have launched Faithbook on the popular social networking site Facebook:

Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand, executive director of the movement said: “So much of what has happened with new media is that it has become a place where extremists can construct messages of hate and intolerance. We have got to combat that and create a space where people who may not meet face to face can have a constructive debate.”

Constructive debate–about religion? Good Luck.  It is encouraging, however, that the initiative is meant to combat extremism.  I certainly hope that “extremists” includes American fundagelicals…

Good thing they didn’t start it up on MySpace!  It would likely be deleted without explanation, although it would likely be restored a month later, also without explanation or comment…
