Vista Service Pack 1, what? Service Pack? for Vista?

Microsoft Corp. has posted a major package of updates and security fixes for its Windows Vista operating system:

So far, the software maker has determined that only a handful of programs will fail in some way after SP1 is installed.

Microsoft said SP1 will block several applications from running for “reliability reasons.”

Wait a minute? Did I read that right? A service pack for Vista? I thought Vista wouldn’t require service packs, or maybe I’m mistakenly remembering something else… Let me go dig…

Ah, yes, I was at least half-right. Cringely’s predictions for 2007, #8:

Windows Vista SP1 to Ship
Speaking of Microsoft, Windows Vista SP1 ships in June despite the fact that Vista structurally shouldn’t require service packs. Except it will.

I’ll take that as a hit. Yay me!
