Senator John McCain got a President’s Day endorsement Monday from former President George H. W. Bush, who called him the best candidate to lead the country and dismissed conservative criticism of his candidacy as “absurd.”

“His character was forged in the crucible of war,” Mr. Bush said at a news conference with Mr. McCain and their wives in an airplane hangar here. “His commitment to America is beyond any doubt. But most importantly, he has the right values and experience to guide our nation forward at this historic moment. And so I’m very proud to endorse John McCain for the presidency of the United States of America.”
