Here we go again. It’s always the “religious” or “pious” people who say the wackiest, craziest and most uninformed stuff!
“People must choose what they want between death [sic] and I propose to them that (abstinence) is the best way to fight HIV/AIDS,” said Archbishop Francisco Chimoio, the head of the Catholic church in Mozambique. Sweet evil Jesus! Who is this guy trying to help? His own fucking Catholic priests can’t remain abstinent (”Catholic priest”, by the way, has become a euphemism for “pederast” or at least “pedophile”)–can this guy seriously expect his congregation to do better?
And this in Africa, no less! The better part of sub-Saharan Africa is dealing with devastatingly high HIV/AIDS infection rates. Uganda is the only country, to date, in sub-Saharan Africa that has had success in battling the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Uganda, using the “ABC” campaign, which is “A”bstinence, “B”e faithful, and use “C”ondoms, has decreased the HIV/AIDS infection rates from about 15% to just over 6% in just a few years.
Get this people–you don’t have to like it, but you’d better get it though your thick skulls: abstinence alone doesn’t work. I don’t care what demographic you’re talking about, if that group is more than a few years post-puberty abstinence ain’t gonna cut it. Every study shows this–even studies of “religious” youth groups who sign “contracts” to remain abstinent until marriage show that they fail miserably. What’s worse is that some studies (not all, but many) show that abstinence-only education leads to an increase in pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease as people in those programs are less likely to practice “safer-sex” due to the condemnation of condoms…
Again, you don’t have to like it, but if you truly love your kids and want what’s best for them, you’d better understand this: (1) people, including your kids and mine, are going to have sex; (2) abstinence-only programs don’t work; and (3) condoms save lives. Good luck!
